Many people over-index on one category of clothing and miss the importance of balance. You may only have statement pieces—bedazzled, printed, bold items that don’t easily mix and match—or you may only have neutrals: oatmeal sweaters, jeans, and black shoes. If it’s the former, you’re missing the grounding staples that allow statement pieces to shine. Think about your most recent weekend event and the experience of pulling apart your closet trying to put a look together. The difference is that in that situation you were rushed, stressed, and operating from urgency. Again, urgency doesn’t create the right circumstances to outfit build thoughtfully. Instead of waiting until your next event, build this into your schedule. Create a variety of outfits and document them so that when something comes up, you can flip through your own “lookbook” rather than starting from scratch. Bonus points if you build outfits with specific lifestyle activities in mind. If you go to the country club every month, practice outfit building for that setting. We are no longer buying the pastel dress solely for the baby shower. That’s not to say you can never shop for an occasion; sometimes that’s necessary. But ideally, your wardrobe will have enough variety and enough pieces you truly love that you can create an outfit for that baby shower using what you already have. When you give very specific instructions to the agent, you actually may get some desirable results. This could be a helpful starting point if you are completely lost and may at least may point you in the right direction in terms of brands or silhouettes to start looking at. Similarly, AI can be useful in helping you with a packing list. When I input the number of days, the location and my age, I got some pretty helpful advice on what to pack. And honestly, it doesn’t differ too much from what I might suggest for clients. When you walk into a store, you see their inventory, determine what you like and walk out with what you love (or empty handed). If you need to return, you can simply drive back and provide them with the item and receipt. While our fast-paced environment doesn’t consider “in-person” events to be convenient, there actually is something very easy about the old way of shopping. Additionally, you only have access to whatever stores are around you so in some sense, your shopping experience is already curated for you. I think online shopping has absolutely revolutionized the way we think about clothing (which is both good and bad). We are no longer letting the store buyers dictate what we’re wearing and there is a lot of freedom in that. That notion really highlights two main “pros” of shopping online. Back to the point of Inventory - what we see as a con of in-person shopping has become the blessing of online shopping. Because we can shop directly from each brand, we actually get their whole slate of options - from extended sizing, to out-of-season items to the brand favorites. This completely opens the world of what is available to us at any given time. I’ll give you some examples on how this manifests: 1) Tall female client (5’10) who gets frustrated she can’t find pants or dresses long enough to be flattering. Determining what needs to be tailored starts in the dressing room (or in the comfort of your home). First, try on each piece as you would style it (ie: wear the piece how you intend to wear it in everyday life, this is particularly important with hem lines). If you plan to wear a jacket over sweaters, you want more room so make sure you’re trying on as such. The consequence is that you may over or under alter the garment because you weren’t focused on the day-to-day styling. Once you try it on, it’s critical that you analyze the fit in the full-length mirror. First, take a look at the length of the garment! Are your sleeves covering any part of your hands? Are your jeans dragging on the ground? Are your culottes making you feel matronly? Is there a gap between my back and my jeans? Is your blouse pulling apart at the bust? These are all the questions you should be asking yourself as you determine the fit of a garment. If the answer is “yes”, the good news is that simple alterations can fix these little annoyances. Because their outfits are so much more simple, the fit becomes so much more important! For example, if a 32 inch inseam on a 6’3 man is just a bit short, he might think he can get away with it. Most mom and pop tailors don’t have websites but many DO have Yelp pages - and the benefit is that you can see how others have experienced the business. I find it very helpful if the tailor has suiting and bridal gown experience. If clients have entrusted the business with their most prized garments, then I am more likely to trust their services. The only real way to test out a tailor is to take a garment and have them conduct some basic alterations. If you are happy with their due diligence (measuring, chalking, pinning) then they are likely reliable. Again, the tailoring experience is that much better when you know exactly what you want. A note on dry cleaners - I personally trust my local dry cleaner with simple alterations like hems. We all know hoodies are a favorite in the Silicon Valley and many of us who have worked in tech have collected countless branded hoodies over the years. And while these hoodies are often comfortable and easy (some wear them like a uniform) - they really weren’t created for an elevated wardrobe and are often used for function vs. fashion. So does the hoodie still have a place in our wardrobe? I think there are some ways to make the hoodie cool. Why not try it layered under a bomber, jean or leather jacket? As mentioned above, layering is a great way to look more interesting and dimensional. It also gives the appearance that you put an effort into dressing and that makes all the difference when showing up at the work-place. Additionally, the hoodie should “match” just like any other jacket you would choose. If you’re wearing a pastel sweater and light blue jeans, a black hoodie will be a very harsh juxtaposition. If a hoodie is a must, make sure it fits well! While we all know an oversized hoodie is comfortable to wrap yourself in, it will come off as “sloppy”. What I found to work well is keeping the hoodie as a functional piece - using it for walking to the office on a cold day or keeping it at my desk as an extra layer if the AC is cranked. A darker wash automatically looks a little bit more formal, pairs well with anything, and elevates a look. Leave your ripped and faded denim at home for the weekends. Well-fitting, crew neck sweater - Again, this is an item necessary for all people in the workplace! The higher neckline of a crewneck is conservative and clean and avoids the need to fuss with under-shirts. A sweater is a great piece for layering - using it over a button-up, thrown over your shoulders or under a jacket. Flip Flops - For the same reason I don’t like distressed jeans, flip-flops give an overly casual, relaxed vibe and that doesn’t feel appropriate for the workplace. While I love that trend, we’re going to see a shift from oversized tops to oversized bottoms. This trend has been quietly increasing for a while but we’re full into oversized pants now. Take the Barrel Jean for example. This jean has extra volume on the side creating a wild and fashion-forward look. In addition to side volume, we’re also seeing jeans/trousers become longer and longer. You’ll notice influencers and celebrities wearing jeans that are dragging on the ground and even being stepped on! Jean brands like Mother and Paige are already selling their own versions of the long jean. This is another recycled trend from the early 00’s (and 80’s before that) but this time, we’re seeing them in a boxier, relaxed version. We’re also leaning into the rugby polo again (long-sleeve with stripes) which I love as a nod to old prep schools. To juxtapose this ultra preppy look, pair it with a relaxed jean and sneaker. Whether choosing a boxy, rugby polo or fitted, classic polo, these are a great alternative to the standard t-shirt and give more interest and dimension with the same comfort and ease. Funky Sandals With the emergence of warm weather comes the freeing of the toes! If you know me, you know how strongly I feel about closed toed shoes in the winter, but now that Spring is springing, you can let those pedicures shine once more! Shopping is often about efficiency! You will be more productive (and successful) when you stay on task. This is especially true with online shopping! Don’t just browse the home page looking at all of the “new” or “what’s hot” items. This is what makes people so overwhelmed - seeing the vastness of the internet options! Go to the “shoes” menu item and then filter for what it is you’re looking for. Perhaps this particular store doesn’t have red pumps at all - that’s okay! At least you figured that out in 1 minute vs. 20 minutes - close the window and move on to the next store. Chukka = Short at the ankle, flat in the heel, made of suede or leather, with 3 hole shoe laces on the lip. There are so many cuts, colors and styles of blazer and I don’t think that one size fits all! For example, if you NEVER have to dress in business professional attire for work, you don’t need a structured Black blazer. In my opinion, this is THE quintessential jacket. Nothing looks more flattering, more youthful and more cool than this garment. It can dress up an athleisure look or dress down an overly formal cocktail dress. It can make an uptight work outfit look more cool and give structure to an outfit made of flowy fabrics. If “edgy” isn’t your style, don’t worry, you don’t have to go with a “moto” type jacket. These pants never go out of style and have been a quintessential part of a woman’s wardrobe since Audrey Hepurn in Funny Face. By definition, they have high waists with wide waistbands, a back zipper (or no zipper), flat fronts and taper towards the ankle. They are very flattering for any body type and look clean and sleek with a tucked in blouse or sweater. I recommend these because they are work appropriate for any job and always elevate an outfit. They are comfortable and easy to pair with a multitude of items. Spanx, Vince, Theory and Aritzia all make a great pair! WHITE OXFORD Like a Black cigarette pant, a White button-up will work wonders in your wardrobe. I use the term Oxford because that is one popular fabric for these shirts, however, these shirts can also be made from poplin, linen, cotton or even silk. Great for under your blazers or over your jeans, the perfect version of this staple can be difficult to find. Whenever I go to a client’s home to edit their closet, I can’t wait to get to the grand finale….SHOES! So often, my clients are minimalists when it comes to shoes. Their closets usually contain just a few pairs of basics (flats, sneaker pair, booties, repeat). This always breaks my heart a little bit because I believe that an outfit lives or dies by the shoes. You can literally BREAK an outfit with a dirty/grungy/not nice looking pair of shoes. In my style boards and shopping excursions, I ALWAYS include shoes because I really feel that only the right shoe can complete an outfit. And don’t misunderstand me, I’m not saying you need a million pairs of shoes, but just because “you already have a pair of white sneakers” from 2010, doesn’t mean I’m not going to recommend a beautiful new pair! Same goes with jackets….so often, we just throw on a jacket because of the weather and don’t actually think about how that will affect the whole look. Maybe your puffy Patagonia doesn’t have to go with your Black Tie gown…..maybe you can take the extra time and money to invest in a nice long overcoat. And while this is an extreme example, I see clients making these kinds of mistakes all of the time. The lesson for me is to communicate the importance of these to an outfit. Your work-wear might be less stiff so incorporate more pieces that are comfortable and easily transferable to a work-from-home outfit. One of my personal favorite transitional looks are the hybrid sweatshirt/blouses. Think Ulla Johnson sweatshirt with pull-sleeves, Alo Yoga clarity long sleeved with cowl neck, Frame shirred sweatshirt or Reformation classic sweatshirt.
