Top Wardrobe Essentials for 2021

What will fashion trends look like when we get out of this long lockdown? It’s a question I keep pondering myself. With nowhere to go, limited shopping excursions and influencers focused on matching sweatsuits, it seems we need a crystal ball to see what the future holds.

But there are a couple things I do know:

  1. People are ready to to go out and party after a year of isolation

  2. People will want to look their best in these newfound outings.

My Prediction is that people will throw on the decadence we missed this year! I’m talking sparkles, glitz, and glam…..imagine the roaring 20s but in a new century.

Vegan, Leather, Pleather...OH MY!

Here’s one BIG trend that came on in early 2020….leather everything! From leather trench coats to leather joggers, we re-imaged all types of clothing essentials in a material that naturally elevates any look.

Because this trend was just taking off when the pandemic hit, I imagine we’ll still want to rock those items we bought.

If you’re new to the leather trend, Here are my favorite vegan leather items that I intend to wear a lot of as soon as we can go out!

And for those of us who may want to be more eco-conscious, there are amazing vegan or faux leather options:

Bring on the feathers!

Like I said, we’re entering into a decade of decadence - and what says decadence more than feathers? I know a lot of people thing feathers make you look like big bird, but just like with all fashion principles, it’s about finding balance. While a full feather frock may be a bit much, a hint of feathers - like a rimmed sleeve - is the perfect detail that brings fun to any occasion.

Or for those you who like to take a little risk….you might even want to try a fully feathered blouse. This strapless feathered top from Revolve is EVERYTHING. Paired with a clean trouser and pump, you can bring the right amount of frill to any occasion.

White After Labor Day

There were no wine tasting events or outdoor cocktail hours this summer….a whole season of wearing white missed!  But don’t worry, my prediction is that we’ll throw out the old rules of “no white after labor day” and bust out our crispest white dresses in early spring.

White never goes out of fashion and you can be sure that 2021 will be no different. White trousers + a white blouse is as timeless a look as they come. You can also opt for white blazer or wrap dresses like this one from Aritzia.

Pro-tip: style with a strong boot to edge up your look.

Not so Broke in Brocade

Brocade is “a rich fabric woven with a raised pattern, typically with gold or silver thread”. As a luxury fabric, this was a common textile used by nobility.

While we no longer have monarchs, there’s no reason we can’t feel like kings/queens! I foresee this luxurious fabric making an appearance….especially for special event clothing.

This fabric can admittedly be a little tricky but check out this Ulla Johnson Helena dress or alice + olivia metallic brocade mini dress for inspo!

Frills and Thrills

Nothing says fun like ruffled details. Again, this was a trend we saw throughout 2020 in the form of peasant tops and puffed-sleeved blouses but I anticipate we will take this up a notch in 2021.

Ruffles add a detail that not only can elevate a plain blouse but also add a little bit of whim and romance. They can also be great tools to hide areas we may feel insecure about or highlight areas we want attention drawn to!

Frills can take even the most basic of chambray tops to the next level….like this top on ShopBop. And after a year of basics….I think we’ll all be craving a little excitement in our clothing.

Only time will tell when we can go back out to events, restaurants and social functions - but here’s one thing I do know…..I will be taking all the opportunities to put on the Ritz!
